As I am aiming to write more relavent relateable content this year, I though this would also be a good one to encourage anyone thinking of starting thier own blog. Blogs are a great way to develop your writing, be creative and talk about subjects you are passionate about. You can also connect with other bloggers on topics and make new connections. I know Vloggers collaberate so I’m not sure if bloggers do it as well but the option could be there. Anyway here is my advice to starting up your own blog and why you should really consider it.
1: FIND A BLOG PLATFORM
The first and most important step is to find a platform to blog. The Most likely choice for this would be WordPress as it does offer a free plan. The free plans allows you to write unlimited posts and you can add as many videos and images as you want. WordPress is the most popular choice for Bloggers. There are other blogging platforms but I think only offer paid plans so WordPress is definitely the way to
Once you have signed up and created your page creating posts is really easy and you can use catergories and tags to reach your target audience. There are also stats to observe the performance of your posts and which ones are doing the best. You can also upload your own grpahics if you want your blog to look unique, this can be done on Canva where you can design your own graphics.
2: PICKING A TOPIC FOR YOUR BLOG
The most important part of your blog of course is what it will be about, what do you want to write about that matters most to you. There are a variety of subjects you can write about such as
- Lifestyle
- Fashion
- Food
- hobbies/Interests
- Films
- TV Shows
- Books
- Music
- Celebrities
- Support/ Advice – Mental Health, LGBT
I would advise to steer clear of subjects such as Politics and Religion as they can be controversial unless you are a well versed expert in these fields. Trying to talk about subjects you dont know anything about could land in you hot water. Going back to catergories and tags when you are creating your post, it is advisable that you use words that closely match with your post. For example if you are writing a blog post about a Book you have recently read, use tags such as book, literature or whatever genre the book is, also use the name of the author to help it stand out.
You also do not have too stay completely on one subject. For example I use my Blog to write about my Favourite Films, Tag Challenges, Books, Music and even film reviews. I have also started writing about more relevant topics such as Mental Health and Coming Out and sharing my own stories and experiences.
3: WRITING POSTS
Firstly you may ask how long should a post be, it can be as long as you want but too long may be too much. Plan out your post and the main points you want to adress so therefore you have a good substantial blog post covering everything you want to say. Don’t feel the need to be formal, let your personality show in your writing so be funny and witty if you want
Lay out a plan for your posts and how often you will post. Grab a notebook and pen (Yes, even in 2020) and list the posts you want to write and schedule when you will post them. Also take the time to brainstorm your posts and other subjects you wish to write about.
Brainstorming and making notes can be very helpful in knowing what you are writing about and avoiding a severe case of writers block.
4: SHARE WITH EVERYONE
Once your post if written, ready to go and published, start sharing it with everyone. Email a link to your friends and family so they can read it. Also share it on all your Social Media Platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. You could also post a link in your Instagram Story. Twitter and Instagram can be helpful as here you can use hastags to ensure your blog reaches a wide audience.
Anyway this is my advice on starting a Blog and I would suggest you consider start one as it can be a great way to develop your writing skills and can be very recreational.
